AirPlay speakers offer iOS users a good alternative to docks.

Cooliris 2.2

An iOS app, the 2.2 version of Cooliris adds features to discover and share photos from Picasa, Flickr, Google+, and Google Drive, besides your phone’s photo gallery or Facebook. iPhone 5 and iPad mini owners get full screen support.

AirPlay is Apple’s patented technology that lets you stream music wirelessly. It uses your WiFi connection to link speakers to your iOS device. It is an alternative to using music players with Apple docks and the advantage is that you can carry your iOS device around the house and use it while the music plays on the speakers. These are a few Airplay speakers currently available in India.

Bose Soundlink Air

Bose Soundlink Air is a wireless speaker for iOS devices such as iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. It is good-looking and sleek, has a polished feel and weighs about 2.1 kg. While the product is portable, the power adapter is rather large to be carried around. The speaker has its volume buttons on the side and a WiFi indicator in the front. It comes with an infrared remote, which is light and has playback buttons.

Just like the Bose Wave III music system, the Soundlink Air is user-friendly. Almost anyone should be able to set it up. There are two cables for connection, one for the power adapter and the other for initial setup. Plug the speaker to your computer, download a file from the Bose website, enter your WiFi password and you are good to go.

The Soundlink Air performs well with almost all kinds of music. For a tiny speaker, the sound quality is pretty good. It is easy to look at the speaker and be sceptical about how it handles bass, but the Soundlink Air has a decent muddy bass. It played tracks with high treble and heavy instrumentals well. Fans of vocals-oriented artists or bands (such as The Beatles) will not be disappointed. However, users will hear distortion at high volumes, which is a little disappointing given how clear the sound is otherwise. This is especially evident in tracks with heavy bass.

At Rs 22,388, Soundlink Air is among the cheaper AirPlay speakers in the market at the moment. It has enough to please most music listeners, but it may not be ideal for a terrace party that needs higher volume. An optional rechargeable battery is available for Rs 6,638,
