As the Narendra Modi-led BJP won a decisive mandate in the Lok Sabha elections, an influential American lawmaker today said the US failed to develop a strong friendship and comprehensive partnership with him when it mattered the most.
"The US-India partnership should be, could be, one of the most defining of the 21st century. But, I am disappointed that the United States failed to develop a strong friendship and comprehensive partnership with Shri Narendra Modi when it mattered most," Congressman Eni Faleomavaega said.
"US-India relations matter strategically, politically, and economically. Consequently, the US should have been a fair and honest broker about human rights," said Faleomavaega, who is a Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific.
Paying tribute to Modi for his clarion call for change, to save the nation from ruin, Faleomavaega applauded his leadership.
Faleomavaega said Modi's victory – the people's victory will be recognised in the Congressional Record next week when the US Congress goes back into session.
"I firmly believe Narendra Modi should be included not only in the annals of India's history but US history, too, because he was elected with a resounding victory despite the US using every recourse it could to disrupt his destiny," he said in a statement.
Faleomavaega said a flag was flown over the US Capitol at his request in Modi's honour on April 7, 2014, to mark victory's dawn.
"Today is a victory for India. History will remember India's 2014 elections as unprecedented. I will remember the 2014 elections as a triumph," he said.
"The people of India have triumphed, and I join with them in congratulating India's next Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, on this momentous occasion," Faleomavaega said.
