The sixth edition of the Walchand Cup, an all-India under-16 National Talent Series Ranking tennis tournament, will begin at Deccan Gymkhana courts from November 8. To he held under the aegis of the All India Tennis Association (AITA) and the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA), the tournament will conclude on November 16. While the qualifying rounds will begin on November 8, the main draw will start on November 11. Over 160 players, including most of the top junior players in the circuit, have confirmed their participation. Snehal Mane, Nida Kamal, Shivani Ingle, Aastha Dargude, Sharlee Deshmukh, Dakshata Patel and Pareen Shivekar are some of the girls playing in the tournament. In the boys’ draw, top ranking Nikshep B R, Sanil Jagtiani, Ishaque Eqbal, Raghav Jaisinghani, Akash Nandwal, Sarthak Bansal, Shrey Gupta and Parikshit Somani will participate. The winner will receive 70 AITA ranking points while the runner-up will walk away with 50 points. The semi-finalists will be awarded 40 points each and the quarterfinalists will get 30 ranking points.
New entrant at IMS-K-1000 Rally
Volkswagen Motorsport India will begin the testing of the Polo R2, a specially developed rally car, during the upcoming IMS K-1000 Rally at Bangalore. Former World Production Car World Rally champion Karamjit Singh, who has been driving for Team Slideways Industries, will get behind the wheel of the newly developed prototype. The Polo R2 will compete in a new category that will be introduced by the Federation of Motorsports Clubs of India (FMSCI) in the Indian Rally Championship (IRC) 2014. The car has been developed and assembled at Volkswagen’s Chakan plant.
Teranikar’s Fitness launches website
Mihir Teranikar’s Sports and Fitness Academy launched its website on Monday. Mihir, a sports and fitness coach, has trained over 800 athletes and fitness enthusiasts till date and has been involved in the physical and functional training of tennis players Sandeep and Nitin Kirtane, cricketers Virag Awate and Rahul Tripathi. He has also trained Indian national women’s team cricketers Kalyani Dhokarikar and Amruta Shinde.
