Welspun Energy, India's biggest developer of solar projects, has been awarded the Assocham Global CSR Excellence Award 2012 for interweaving business with social inclusion and environment sustainability.
The award was presented by former President A P J Abdul Kalam.
"In a short span of time, Welspun Energy has become the largest clean energy company in India," the company said in a press statement here. "Simultaneous to business growth, Welspun Energy's social inclusion programs have been launched
at all its project sites."
Industry chamber Assocham selected this year's winners based on their corporate strategy that focuses on positive impacts.
Welspun Energy has all its projects engaged with local communities through programmes like Training the Trainer, Enrolling children in Schools and Skill Development for Women.
"Its social inclusion initiatives are beginning to show transformational results in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan," the statement said.
Stating that local communities are key stakeholders, company co-founder and Managing Director Vineet Mittal said any business must share its prosperity with those around it.
"Welspun Energy has been working on its triple bottom line. We have been engaging with local people to understand their needs and concerns. Based on extensive consultations with the Sarpanch, District Collectors and local residents, we devise and implement our CSR programs," he said.
Welspun Energy is part of the USD 3.5 billion Welspun Group, which ranks amongst India's fastest emerging conglomerates with businesses in power generation, infrastructure, exploration and production of oil and natural gas, steel pipes and textiles.
It is setting up 750 MW of solar power and 1 GW of wind power plants across India, which are amongst the largest capacities for power generation in the country.
