Why the Nokia Lumia 630 price seems a good ploy to thwart Motorola’s Moto E

Motorola’s latest, to be announced tomorrow, is likely to be priced around Rs 10,000.

Nokia, or to be politically correct Microsoft Mobile Oy, launched the Lumia 630 in India on Monday. The phone finally came with a price tag of Rs 10,500 for the single SIM version, and Rs 11,500 for the dual-SIM model. Both very competitive prices for the Indian market, considering this is a 4.5-inch smartphone with a 5-MP camera and the promise of Nokia durability. Everyone was expecting the price to be at least Rs 2,000 more.

But the price, as aggressive as it is, seems to have been prompted by the expected launch of the ?Moto E? in India tomorrow. Motorola, buoyed by the success of its Moto G devices in India, seems all set to launch its new device primarily aimed at emerging markets like India. We expect that phone to be priced around Rs 10,000, or even a bit lower given that the company wants to ?connect more people to the world?s information and each other?.

It is, however, a win-win for Indian customers, who now have a wide range of smartphones to pick around the magical Rs 10,000 price point. Nokia is a strong player in this segment with its popular Lumia 525 and will now offer a larger screen and more power at not much of an extra cost with its Lumia 630. The older Nokia Lumia 520 is also selling well at Rs 8,000. Microsoft?s Windows Phone operating systems that run on Lumia devices offers a more stable performance compared to Android at lower price points. And this has been the reason why a lot of users have preferred Lumia in this price point.

But Motorola?s new device would undoubtedly offer a better experience than most other Androids in this price category. And that is why Nokia has to stay relevant with a device that offers similar, or better, features. We don?t know what the Moto E ? if it is called that ? will offer, but it should compete with the Nokia Lumia 630, and other devices like the HTC Desire, Sony Xperia E1 and Samsung Galaxy S Duos. For those looking for a budget smartphone, there is a wider array of choice now.
