Xiaomi Mi 3: Gone in 5 seconds off Flipkart shelves

Flipkart saw unprecedented 250,000 users trying to purchase Xiaomi Mi 3 when the sale opened.

Five seconds. That?s how long it took for Flipkart to sell its entire stock of Xiaomi?s Mi 3 for the week. Till date the e-commerce major has sold 20,000 units of the phone, launched in India just over a week back.?

Flipkart said the site saw an unprecedented 2,50,000 users simultaneously trying to purchase the phone when the sale opened on Tuesday. The firm claimed this was four times higher than the heaviest level ever experienced by Flipkart?s infrastructure. This means the phone, priced at Rs 13,999 on Flipkart, did much better than the Moto E which is also sold only via the site.?

?At 2 pm sharp, when the countdown timer on the Mi 3 page hit 00:00:00, users were able to instantly add the product to their shopping carts and were then taken to the payment and checkout pages which they completed at their leisure,? the press note said.?

Those who bought the phone on Tuesday had booked earlier. Tech blogs have already been running stories on how to crack the queue and get a Mi 3 in the shopping cart as soon as sales open. While there were a lot of disappointed buyers this time too, the Mi 3 has been listed at some other sites where it is being sold at a premium, obviously by those unsuccessful at buying the phone from Flipkart.

Hugo Barra, VP, Xiaomi Global tweeted: ?Mi 3 flash sale in India today, gone in… 5 seconds on @Flipkart.?

Flipkart CEO Sachin Bansal said the Mi sales model is a new concept for Flipkart as well as customers. ?We learned a lot during last week?s sale and, after directing our entire team to work on improving the customer experience over the last week, we have made significant progress,? he added. It is however a bit surprising that the two firms are selling the phone in weekly quotas instead of making the entire inventory available in one go.
