With pressure mounting on Delhi University to rollback its four-year undergraduate programme and revert to the three-year system, DU officials have proposed measures to make the shift smoother. However, DU can revert to the three-year system only after the rollback is approved by all statutory bodies, senior university officials said.
?First, meetings have to be held between college staff and departments to approve the proposal. Their resolution will then be placed in the faculty councils. The statutory bodies ? the Academic Council and the Executive Council ? will then have to approve the changes. Following this, the proposal has to be approved by the University Court. Lastly, the Visitor ? the President ? will have to give the final approval,? an official said.
The official added that if the Visitor does not disapprove the proposal within 30 days, the reform is considered to have been approved by him.
Delhi Union Teachers Association (DUTA) President Nandita Narain said, ?We have already made suggestions in the standing committee for the present batch of students under FYUP. This has to be approved by the academic council. But for students applying this year, the process will be simpler since all courses previously taught at DU before FYUP are UGC approved. The admissions committee only needs to release new guidelines for colleges.?
Recommendations to tweak the FYUP to accommodate it in the three-year format, however, would require more deliberation, Narain said.
?The recommendations will go back to UGC, which will advise authorities to place it before the committee of courses. It will then go the Academic Council and the Executive Council for approval. Colleges can then determine their workload and timetables based on the fresh guidelines,? she said.
