Seagate Backup Plus 500 GB is a portable hard drive, which, as the name suggests, offers 500 GB of data storage capacity. The device runs on USB 3.0 interface, and with that it boasts of fast data transfer speed. It is backward compatible with USB 2.0. It has a metallic silver look, and is very light at about 225 gm.
The Backup Plus portable drive comes in two parts, the drive itself and an adapter that determines the type of connections. The hard drive is a 2.5-inch SATA internal hard drive housed in a plastic chassis that has a small opening on one side to reveal the internal hard drive?s standard SATA female connector. The adapter part has a male SATA connector and a Mini-USB 3.0 port. These two parts can be snapped onto each other to form a portable hard drive.
Along with this drive, you also get a free online backup of up to 4 GB which is powered by Nero. To use the device backup feature, you first have to instal the Seagate Dashboard that comes preloaded on the drive. The home screen has three modules?Protect, Share and Save. A unique feature of this drive is that you can backup contents of your social media account automatically. We tested the drive on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with a Core 2 Duo processor. It took about a minute in transferring a file of size 1.5 GB. To transfer a 700 MB single file from a PC, it took 32 seconds.
The hard drive offers an easy and convenient way to store and back up data, integrate videos and photos from social networking sites such as Facebook, Photobucket and Flickr and Youtube. The Backup Plus model is pretty slim and lightweight and comes in two categories. The lighter series is the portable ones that come in 500 GB and 1 TB (1,000 GB) sizes. The bulkier desktop models come in 2 TB and 3 TB sizes. One of the distinct features of the hard disk is the drive?s dashboard software interface which allows users to seamlessly backup and share files from and to various social networks and Windows and Mac OS machines. The drive’s included backup software works well and is easy to use.
Overall, it is quite a good performer that also provides cloud storage on the go. If you want a good-looking and compact portable drive to back up your computer or extend its storage space, the new Seagate Backup Plus makes an excellent buy.
