Finance minister Arun Jaitley underwent a planned diabetes management surgery at a private hospital in New Delhi on Tuesday and was recovering well, according to a statement by the BJP. ?Arun Jaitley, cabinet minister, underwent a planned elective laparoscopic procedure for diabetes management under Dr Pradeep K Chowbey at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket, today. The procedure has been successful,? it said.
Jaitley, who also has additional charge of the crucial defence and corporate affairs portfolios, was admitted on Monday evening. He has been a diabetic for the last few years. ?He was admitted around 6 pm yesterday. The surgery is done in an uncontrolled diabetic situation,? Dr Chowbey said.
?In this procedure we staple the stomach and make a small pouch of it and connect it to the intestine. Thus food from the small pouch goes to the intestine directly. All this is done endoscopically and laparoscopically,? he was quoted as saying by agencies.
Chowbey said Jaitley, who had undergone routine blood and cardiac investigations before the surgery, was doing fine and will be discharged in a day or two. It was not clear if Jaitley, 61, would return to work immediately after being discharged. Finance ministry officials said he could be on leave till Friday to recover.
