Death knell for democracy

It was unfortunate how the Union cabinet sounded the death knell for democracy by clearing an ordinance which protects MPs and MLAs from being disqualified for being convicted by a court of law. Especially in today’s circumstances, it was correct on the part of the Supreme Court to have struck down Section 8(4) of the Representation of the People Act. The Supreme Court must take suo motu cognisance and strike down the ordinance if it comes into effect. Here, Rahul Gandhi’s views are appreciated.

Practice, then preach

Apropos of the Eavesdropper “Cosmetic Cure” (FE, September 28), Veerappa Moily?s views to reduce fuel consumption are quite informative but don’t they reek of hypocrisy? Moily must realise that charity begins at home so he must first put an end to the blatant misuse of official vehicles by netas and their family members.
