Kingfisher Airlines chairman Vijay Mallya appeared before the Special Court for Economic Offences here on Thursday, with a bail plea in connection with the criminal cases filed against him by the Income Tax (I-T) department. The court granted Mallya bail on furnishing a surety of R3 lakh.
Mallya's personal appearance before the court comes five months after the court issued the summons to him. The I-T department had, last year, slapped three cases against Kingfisher Airlines and Mallya for not remitting tax deducted at source (TDS) for three financial years. The department had demanded around R304 crore as TDS due from the airline over three years starting 2009-10.
Dressed in a white shirt & trousers and white shoes, sans his diamond earrings, Mallya stood for about forty minutes before the magistrate as arguments on his bail applications were being heard.
