Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday slammed BJP PM nominee Narendra Modi on the issue of his anti-corruption credentials pointing out the Gujarat government had let the corruption watchdog to remain leaderless for 10 years.
?The way some people talk, it sounds as if they have taken a bath in milk…. Then why did they try to keep the Lokayukta in Gujarat vacant for 10 years?? questioned Sonia as she campaigned for party candidate Akhilesh Prasad Singh here on Monday ? the last day of the campaigning before the May 7 polls.
The Modi-led Gujarat government appointed a Lokayukta in the end of November 2013 after letting the post remain vacant since December 2003. In August 2013, a retired Justice of the High Court, appointed by the Governor, refused to take charge alleging that the state government had spent Rs 45 crore to legally challenge his appointment.
At the rally, which ended five minutes before 5 PM ? the deadline for the campaigning to end ? Sonia spoke for just over 13 minutes. She said that no other party other than the Congress has worked more to end corruption in the country. ?….There is a zameen-aasmaan difference in what he (Modi) says and what he does. We have passed the Lokpal, we have ensured that the guilty are punished.?
