Gold, silver zoom on brisk seasonal buying, global cues

Gold prices jumped by Rs 470 to Rs 30,670 per 10 gm in the Capital on Monday. Silver followed suit and climbed by Rs 405 to Rs 45,025 per kg on increased offtake by industrial units and coins makers. A similar trend was seen in Mumbai, as gold of 99.9% and 99.5% purity traded at Rs 30,480 and Rs 30,330 per 10 gm, while silver enquired at Rs 45,850 per kg on fresh buying. Trader said sentiment turned bullish as stockists and retailers indulged in brisk buying for the ongoing marriage season amid a firming global trend. Gold in overseas markets rose to two-week high, as US jobs data missed estimates and Chinese buyers returned after the Lunar New Year break. Gold in Singapore, which sets price trend on the domestic front, rose by 0.7% to $1,276.03 an ounce, the highest since January 27 and silver added 0.7% to $20.16 an ounce.

Railways carried 866.14 million tonne (mt) of freight traffic in the first three quarters of 2013-14, registering a growth of 4.63% over the same period in the previous year. During the same period in 2012-13, the Railways carried 827.79 mt, railway ministry data said. The Railways carried 96.40 mt of traffic in January 2014, an increase of 3.83 mt over the freight traffic of 92.57 mt carried in the same period last year, showing an increase of 4.14%.
