Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi will soon take over from GE Vahanvati as the attorney general of the country. Rohatgi said his top priority as AG would be to ?streamline litigations in the Supreme Court.?
?I will see that the superior courts are not flooded with frivolous and petty litigations,? he said, adding he would make all efforts to check that the government does not involve itself in inter-ministerial litigations.
One of the country?s highest-paid lawyers, Rohatgi has represented the Narendra Modi-led Gujarat government, defended BJP general secretary Varun Gandhi against the preventive detention order passed by the previous Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh for making a hate speech in the apex court. He has also represented Anil Ambani in the gas dispute between the Ambani brothers and the Italian marines involved in killing two fishermen off the Kerala coast in 2012.
Rohatgi was appointed additional solicitor general by the Vajpayee government in 1999, an appointment that saw him shift base to the Supreme Court. An avid collector of supercars, Rohatgi also loves travelling.
