Maharashtra developers and residents have received a shot in the arm with the Supreme Court on Thursday setting aside the Bombay High Court order that held approximately 9,193 acre and 37 gunthas of land situated within the municipal limits of Greater Mumbai as private forests. Now, leading developers Godrej and Boyce, Oberoi Constructions, Nanabhai Jeejeebhoy, Atithi Builders, Normal Lifestyle and Nirmal Developers and residents can go ahead with their stalled residential, industrial and commercial projects in Mumbai?s eastern and western suburbs in the Bhandup-Mulund-Thane and Borivli-Kandivli belts as the apex court has quashed the stop-work notices issued to them by the Bombay Municipal Corporation for constructing flats on such land in blatant violation of the Forest Conservation Act.

The entire belt, measuring more than 117.6 acres, has thousands of residential buildings and factories of companies like Hoechst, Schrader Duncan, Rallis Wolf, Rallis Fan, Burroughs Welcome, Johnson & Johnson and a hospital.
