Indian squad?s performance at Commonwealth Games boosts interest in emerging sport disciplines among fans

Bangalore, August 04, 2014: After a record performance in the XIX Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi winning 101 (38 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze) medals, a strong 215 member contingent from India lead the athletes? parade at the opening ceremony of the XX Commonwealth Games. Fans back home in India continued to bolster their support with increasing interest in these games reflected through online searches on Google.

As the curtain went down on the XX Commonwealth Games, India notched up a respectable number of medals. Ranking fifth in the medal tally after England, Australia, Canada and Scotland the Indian medal tally stood at a total of 64 medals including 15 Gold, 30 Silver and 19 Bronze medals.

Indian wrestling prodigy Sushil Kumar remained the most searched athlete as the Indian wrestling squad put forward some spectacular performances scooping 13 medals, including five (05) gold medals. Besides the experienced campaigners, Indian teenager and female wrestler Vinesh Phogat registered a thrilling win over England’s Yana Rattigan to clinch the gold medal in the women’s freestyle 48 kg wrestling competition.

Badminton remained the most searched sporting discipline as the Indian badminton star Parupalli Kashyap became the first Indian man to win a badminton gold at the Games in 32 years. It was a historic win as he clinched the gold for India and generated a lot of buzz online. Boxing and Wrestling stood second and third respectively among the highly searched disciplines during the games.

In this cricket crazy nation, stellar performances by the Indian squad at the XX Commonwealth Games helped generate a lot of interest and inclination especially with increasing searches by fans in favour of national sports including Wrestling, Badminton, Weight lifting and Shooting.

Apart from wrestling, the other big discipline was shooting where the Indian squad won 18 medals including four (04) gold medals with the Olympic Gold winner Abhinav Bindra striking ?gold? again. Searches for him spiked as he remained the second most searched Indian athlete during the XX Commonwealth Games.

Other Indian athletes who were widely searched online included Vijender Singh (Boxing), Yogeshwar Dutt (Wrestling), and Vikas Gowda (Athletics) and Parupalli Kashyap (Badminton).
